February in Books
I have decided to make a change and move from describing all books that I read in a given month to describing only these that I would truly recommend you read, from the highest ranked (by myself). In effect, out of 13 books I read (or listened to) in February, here you get 6. To the top two, I have listened twice, to the rest — I surely will in the future. As a fun fact, I listen to my favourite books a couple of times every year, and Brene Brown’s “Dare to Lead” together with Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” have both already been listened to four times. This is so good and so full of research data that after listening to it as the first book in the month, I re-listened at the very end. Angela Duckworth used to work at McKinsey, but she always felt her calling is in educating and research, so after pursuing an additional degree in neurobiology at Oxford she returned to the profession she pursued straight out of school — to teaching math. Although this is completely besides the main point of the book, I wanted to just recall how she says that in moving from McKinsey to teaching she went from “Am I seriously getting paid that much?” to “How people make ends meet on these teacher wages?” These enormous difference in earnings certainly contributes to self-selection of smart, motivated people to professions, to…
